Theory of Knowledge
Fall 2006
Optional Final Paper
Instead of taking the taking take-home final, you may write a final paper.
Due: Monday, Dec.18th (same as take-home final).
Length: Approx. 10 pages.
Topics: Your choice. It must be approved by me prior to Dec. 8. To get approval, submit a one page description of your topic
Suggestions:
i) A critical examination of some issue that we’ve discussed. For example, in connection with what we are doing now, you might examine in more detail the inductive and pragmatic defenses of induction.
ii) Discuss an article from the anthology that we have not covered. Suggestions: Huemer on memory (pp. 113-123), Coady on testimony (pp. 239-249), Stove on induction (pp. 352-367), Haack on justification (pp. 417-430). [Possibly, some additional suggestions will be made in class.)
If you write about one of these essays, do not merely summarize the essay and do not attempt to discuss all the points raised in the essay. Instead, focus on some point, or set of related points, in the essay and critically examine that point or those points. Be sure to state clearly what your topic is, to explain the views being discussed clearly, and to explain any critical comments you have in clear and direct way.
