Philosophy 348
Fall 2003
Second Assignment

Read the selections from David Hume, pp. 57-85. On p. 69 Hume says that "the whole controversy [about "necessity" and "liberty"] has hitherto turned merely upon words."

1) What does Hume mean when he says the controversy has "turned merely upon words."

2) What does he think the key words in the controversy mean? Try to formulate clear, precise, short definitions.

3) Presumably, once we are clear about the meanings of the key words, we should see our way through to a resolution of the controversy. What is Hume's resolution?

4) What do you think of this resolution? One good paragraph will suffice. It's enough to make some point about Hume's view. You need not try to "prove" that he's right or "prove" that he's wrong.
