Philosophy 348
Fall 2003
Assignment N+1

Read Frankfurt's essay "Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility." (P13, W8). Frankfurt argues that the principle of alternate possibilities is false. Here are some things you might write about in connection with Frankfurt's paper. It's probably best to pick just one of them as your topic. Of course, you can write about other issues raised in his paper as well.

1) The key example in the paper is the example of Jones4. Does this example succeed in showing that the principle of alternate possibilities (PAP) is false?

2) Assuming that the answer to (1) is "yes": is there some other principle, very similar to (PAP), that is not refuted by Frankfurt's examples. That is, is the central idea behind (PAP) true, even though (PAP) itself is false. In other words, is (PAP) not quite the right formulation of the idea that moral responsibilities requires alternate possibilities.

3) Assume Frankfurt is right about (PAP). What, if anything, does this tell us about the connection between moral responsibility and determinism?

4) Again, assume Frankfurt is right about (PAP). What, if anything, does this tell us about the connection between freedom and determinism?

Due: Monday, 11/17.
